Switching from Old Style Boards to New Style Boards
Any old timers out there venturing into the new designs will find that you have to reposition your stance to fit the new rail designs. First, stay more upright in your stance–shorten your harness lines and/or raise your boom. Our rear-ends should not be touching the water. Second, to go upwind, lean slightly forward as you sheet-in, instead of leaning out toward your back as we used to do on older boards. Third, downwind position is hanging more toward the back of the board thus having the sail sheeted-out more. Fourth, to go across the wind, lean out, not toward the back of the board as we used to do. Overall, remember to stand more upright on the board.

When Do I Start Using a Harness?
Once you are able to trim your sail properly–which means you are using your front hand for steering and your back hand for trimming (speed). A harness lesson takes half an hour and you will learn how to fall properly – that is, how to fall and avoid injury to yourself or to the equipment!

I've Taken the Two Hour Course--Now What?
Time on the water, as the saying goes. Practice and get comfortable on the board for 3-4 hours. Your next step is to increase the sail size and decrease the flotation on the board (i.e., a board with less volume). Our advice is to change one variable at a time–either sail size or board size. As stressed in the first two hour lesson, you need to learn to use your arms independently of one another. Trimming your sails properly will allow you to move on to beach starts, water starts, handling bigger sails and being able to point up or downwind at will.
